Hi Tom.

Just found your blog after reading one of your comments on another blog. Had to see how you managed making a website. Pretty well, indeed, I must say.

And then I read this well-written post, which I enjoyed. Thanks for the story.

Happy writing,

I agree Walter. When I walk along the street, several people come up to me after I've reached my destination, making it a point to tell me how proud they are of me of being able to have the courage to do what I do.

I don't do it for that reason, but its nice to hear.

Family, on the other hand, react a different way. They become scared for you. My old girlfriend Kristy's parents, won't even let her walk on the sidewalk outside her home without a sighted person present, and that is the jist of why her and I ended up breaking up, for its one thing to treat her like that, but I had to stand up for myself and say "hey look, she lives under your roof so she has to do what you say, thats fine, but I don't have to do what you say" so her dad said we had to break up.

I just think its sad, because for one thing, just because she doesn't even have light perception, or because she's a girl, doesn't mean she shouldn't be able to be independant, and the same goes for me. Sure, there are robbers and rapists out there in the world, but its no different then someone walking into your home and robbing or raping you, it can still happen. The point is, you don't stop living your life because your afraid. We all have some kind of fear where we have no choice but to confront that fear head on in order to survive, for there is no such things as being completely safe.

Its like her sister told me, "haven't you ever heard of the buddy system?" Well, yes, but trust me, if a rapist saw 2 women walking down the street, you don't think that rapist would kidnap or rape both women? Of course he would, and its no different just because I'm a guy. There will always be threats, but that rapist could always break into my home too, so does it make it less threatening? I don't think so. Same is true for walking being afraid someone might hit you, just like everyday life, we just have to not worry about it, that is all we can do.

I admire your choice of being independent. The truth is most people are afraid of being independent. :-)

Hi Tom, I saw that you left a comment on adambreckler.com/setting-up-facebook-connect-for-wordpress that your facebook connect was giving you an application under construction error. I am having the same error and can't figure out how to fix it. Can you tell me how you did?

One day a well respected man falls down from the roof of his house. All the relatives and neighbors come to his house to see him. Seeing the crowd, that man asks whether if there was somebody who have fallen down from the roof before. One person replies back that it has happened to him few months ago. Injured person asks everyone to go out but the person who has fallen down before. Relatives and neighbors ask him: why do you want us to go? we are here for you. Man answers that even though all of you are here to share my pain, there is only one person who knows how hard my pain is and what i am going through.

It is an old middle eastern story, which is told from grandparents to grandchildren in my country. By the way, my name is Ali.

I believe that your family and friends love you, but sometimes they will not be able to reach you if you don't share your inner thoughts with them.

Hey Tom, There's a backup of your old site at Archive.org: http://web.archive.org/web/20080126191335/http://www.tcoburn.com/ - I hope this is useful to you!
My brother has had a visual impairment from birth due to Cerebral Palsy, so I'll have to check out Window Eyes.
Good luck with the blog!
